Chapter 10

Julian Richards did not comp our meals—not that I expected him to. He did, however, add a service charge in lieu of pressing charges against Georgie. But once Huxley took a look at the service charge about to hit his credit card, he begged, rather profusely, for the sheriff’s department to lock Georgie up for life.

The next day Jasper left for work early, vowing to dig deeper into Julian Richards, since we weren’t able to get him to divulge his secret but were certainly able to ascertain the fact he didn’t care for good old Uncle Glenn. Jasper also mentioned he’d try to dig around to find a way to access the financial records from the Pitts Stop Dealership. I let him know that we didn’t need a court order to dig into them—we have Aunt Birdie to get us the goods—but he let me know that she doesn’t have legal right to the facility as of yet so the long road is the only option.

Maybe the long road is the only option for him, but not for me. Although I’m not digging into any financial records just yet, it is definitely on my to-do list. But not at the moment.

I felt so bad about the fact my family got kicked out of a posh restaurant last night that I hosted an elegant seaside dinner right outside the café this evening in an effort to make up for it. And now that our bellies are full and the sun is setting, we’ve moved the party down to the beach where I’ve set up a huge bonfire to accommodate our budding brood.

As soon as it’s dark enough, the inn is hosting a movie night under the stars this evening. It’s a double feature night. First, we’re watching the Disney movie Moana for the families staying with us, then switching to Jaws for the older set once that’s through. I’m sure that will make swimming extra fun for the guests that stay for the second showing. My immediate staff comprised of Jordy, Nessa, and Grady thought it would be hilarious and outvoted me.

I told them playing a movie about a great white in late August would be a perfect way to ruin someone’s desire to swim in the Atlantic for the rest of the season, if not the rest of their life, but they brought up the point that almost everyone on the planet has already seen it, so there’s that. Next time, I think I’ll let the entire staff vote on our movie selections. My guess is they’re not nearly as twisted as those I hold close to the vest.

The entire length of the cove is dotted with bonfires tonight, each one with s’mores service available, which has been a huge hit this summer—and it’s being offered along with Aunt Birdie’s banana pudding, which will have to be a staple at the café because the kitchen staff can’t make it fast enough.
